SE C905

The buzz about Paris is suddenly replaced by the presence of ‘Shiho’ or the Cyber-shot C905. All attentions go to an amazing 8.1 MP camera that will be attached to the new C905, or so the rumour said. If that’s not enough, the C905 will also have xenon and LED flashes GPS, TV out, DLNA certification, and HSDPA. The screen’s apparently just QVGA, but in light of everything else we’re hearing, we might just be willing to let that slide. It’ll apparently be announced on the 17th of the month in gold, silver, and black for a fourth quarter release.

Here are the full specifications of the Sony Ericsson C905

All of those James Bond wannabe out there must be thrilled by this breakthrough from Sony Ericsson. The Swedish-Japanese manufacturer will bring us one step closer to the famous character by patenting embedded radar technology into handsets. The combination of the radar technology, inbuilt GPS system and sophisticated camera will give us the capability of finding a target, click its high resolution image and even determine it velocity and other details.

Too bad it doesn’t have a rocket launcher or a synchronised powerful laser beam to complete the ‘seek and destroy’ mission for Bond. Probably, this one is just for locating and clicking pictures of potential Bond girls!

SE Patents

Over the past few years, the development of mobile handset’s technology has gone to a different level. It is proven with the presence of cameras in almost all of mobile handsets we’ve seen lately. But it seems that the Swedish-Japanese manufacturer have a new and different point of view. Instead of attaching cameras into handsets, they started to try to put handset functionalities into cameras.

Not to make them into a phones, but to provide modern cameras with the same data connectivity options that even the simplest camera in mobile handset has.

Wouldn’t that be a good idea?

Sony Ericsson Fuel Cell

Sony tries to be more eco-friendly as they showed their latest fuel-cell technology at the Small Fuel Cells 2008 conference. They’ve created a tiny fuel cell prototype that was aimed to be used on cell phones. The new system will be commercialized by the company in short time.

It could be a while before you can use your phone for months with just occasional refill of methanol though; there was talk about fuel cells taking over the laptop market for a while now, and we all know how that’s going so far. What’s more, this product is fresh out of the labs.

The specs do look impressive though: with just 10 mL of methanol, this fuel cell can keep a generic mobile phone showing a 1seg (Japan’s video broadcasting service) movie for 14 hours straight. Did I mention how tiny it actually is?

se patent

The new patent from Sony Ericsson was called “portable electronic device with multiple input interfaces”. It looks like the new device was aimed to provide several functions in a single device to avoid old and inconvenient way of carrying two or more devices to perform different functions.

The present invention relates to an electronic device having multiple input interfaces. In one embodiment of the invention, the electronic device comprises a main body, a reversible flip attached to the main body, a first input interface on the main body, a second input interface on a first side of the flip, and a third input interface on a second side of the flip. The first input interface may be positioned on the main body so that it is covered by the flip when the flip is in a closed position. Thus, either the second or third input interfaces are presented to the user when the flip is closed. The user opens the flip to access the first input interface.

johan-bergendahl-ericsson.jpgMobile broadband will take over the ‘outmoded’ Wifi Hotspots’ position. That’s what the Ericsson Chief Marketing Officer Johan Bergendahl stated at the conference in Stockholm. However this statement doesn’t surprise some people who have predicted it a while ago. Bergendahl also said that hot spots at places like Starbucks are becoming the telephone boxes of the broadband era and in a few years [HSPA] will be as common as Wi-Fi is today. Leading to that widespread use, he says, is ever-decreasing prices for mobile broadband subscriptions, and the fact that HSPA is being built into more and more laptops. Of course, if other companies have their way, WiFi hotspots could become a thing of the past simply because entire cities would effectively be one huge hotspot, although we’d gladly take both options.

People always describes megapixel count for camera quality. But tell that to the marketing department of some cellphone vendor. For the guys and gals working there, it’s like saying saying that special effects and gadgets are not important in the next James Bond movie.

So the megapixel war in a cameraphones will continue for years to come, just as it continues in a digital still camera category today. This year we will see 8 megapixel cameras in mobile phones, and the next year…
