iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1 has new HDR photos (High dynamic range photos) function that enables you to get much better pictures in strong light. Unfortunately, this cool feature is not available on iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. But with little tweaks, you can activate HDR functionality easily. Thanks to Will Strafach for the tutorial.
To Activate HDR function, you need to modify a plist system file. However, to modify a system file, you will need the Jailbreak. iOS 4.1 jailbreak is still not available and as soon as the ios 4.1 is jailbroken you can right away follow these steps to activate HDR on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
Steps to Enable HDR photos on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G
Prerequisites
* Jailbroken iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 firmware.
* OpenSSH installed
* An SFTP client on your computer
Step 1: Connect to iPhone via SSH
* If you have an iPhone 3G grab the file from the following path: / System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist
* If you have an iPhone 3GS grab the file from here: / System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N88AP.plist
Step 2: Copy the plist file on the desktop of your computer and open it.
Step 3: Add a key named “hdr-image-capture” with a boolean value of “true” to the ‘capabilities” section of this property list as shown in screenshot. Just, copy and paste the following string in the file:
hdr-image-capture
Step 4: Save the plist and upload it back into the iPhone using SSH.

Step 5: Restart SpringBoard, or just Reboot your device
Voila! You now have HDR setting in the camera application of your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS! The method was discovered by cdevwill and works flawlessly but need to wait till iPhone dev Team releases tools to jailbreak iOS 4.1 firmware.

Same deal. I did everything exactly, and the HDR option is enabled in Settings -> Photos, but still no HDR pictures are actually taken.
