MobileBurn’s Michael Oryl got the chance to play around with Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 at the CTIA Wireless 2008 show, Las Vegas. One of the big questions around the X1 has been “what do the panels do?” Well, now we know. They provide quick access to both apps and different home screens, as you can see in the video demo below.
At the end of the demo we see the very cool “fish” panel that actually shows status information about things like battery levels and missed calls. It is not the most practical thing in the world, but it is a good example of what can be done with the panels system. Sony Ericsson’s Suzanne Cross, the voice in the video, said that the company was courting 3rd party developers to create new panels.
Several days ago, the UIQ Technology has announced the release of UIQ 3.3. However, in the present there are no manufacturers has announced phones that is able to use the technology. But of course there will be Sony Ericsson’s phones that are able to use the UIQ 3.3. Our friends at se-nse had confirmed that two well-known manufacturers namely Motorola and Sony Ericsson will announce products making use of UIQ 3.3. They believed that the phones will be around within a month’s time.
BeiBei is one of the unannounced smart phones from Sony Ericsson that is most likely to use UIQ 3.3. Lots of signs point to this as being the platform used.

Some buzzes have been around on the Sony Ericsson Z780 one day before CTIA begins. The rumor said that Sony Ericsson had announced a clamshell phone similar to the Z2780 at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona in February with the name of Z770i, a clamshell phone optimized for the Internet and was HSDPA enabled for faster browsing.
The Z780 is expected to have similar specifications but probably optimised for an American carrier with support for 1900 Mhz HSDPA, the band used in the US (unlike 2100 Mhz in Europe and other countries). A product page for the Z780 has popped up on Sony Ericsson’s website, which is a sign that the announcement is just a few hours away. We will keep our eyes peeled for this one.

Finally…after some rumors a while ago, Sony Ericsson brings 3G technology onto the AT&T. Endagdet said that the colorful Z750 clamshell will come on early April. The phone’s OLED external display is cleverly concealed by the phone’s translucent shell, a 2 megapixel camera and media player both backed up with Memory Stick Micro M2 expansion, stereo Bluetooth, and of course, that lovely HSDPA 850 / 1900 that’s eluded Sony Ericsson’s AT&T offerings for far, far too long. Look for it to go out the door for $49.99 after a $100 rebate.
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications has announced their new Head of Marketing to replace Dee Dutta. Lennard Hoornik will take the position effective 1st of April. The world’s first ever game of tennis on water was held by the Sony Ericsson to celebrate the opening of the tennis tournament Sony Ericsson Open.
Well known tennis players, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal are the first “lucky” athletes that tried their luck on the challenging court. The game was played at the top of the new Gansevoort South Hotel in the 110 feet swimming pool near Miami’s South Beach as it officially opened its doors for the first time.
It took seven days to bring the court in to real by specialist underwater team. They constructed two invisible platforms at either end of the pool for the players to stand and play using a combination of bespoke acrylic sheets and supporting acrylic tubes that were bonded together. The pool was then filled with water before adding the finishing touches of a net and Sony Ericsson Open ball girls and boys.
